LinksContact UsText Box: Text Box: This website was originally developed as a means of public outreach associated with the Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) for Site Selection for the US Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and the University Medical Center (UMC)*. The site selection/site preparation process was completed in November 2008 when both VA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the City of New Orleans signed independent Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) documents. This website will continue to provide information on project schedules, public meetings, comment deadlines, documentation, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 consultation for all subsequent, tiered environmental analyses related to the replacement VAMC.

VA proposes to utilize federal funding to construct a replacement VAMC in New Orleans. The existing VAMC was closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina due to the extensive damages caused by the storm and from extended submersion in floodwaters. The location for the replacement VAMC will be the 30 acre site bounded by bounded by Canal Street to the northeast, South Galvez Street to the southeast, Tulane Avenue to the southwest, and South Rocheblave Street to the northwest.

VA is currently engaged in NEPA and NHPA compliance activities for future actions associated with the site-specific design and construction process. This site-specific process is the second in a series of tiered or phased environmental analyses. In 2008, VA, in partnership with FEMA, State of Louisiana Office of Facilities Planning & Control, and City of New Orleans, conducted a PEA for the site selection and site preparation for the replacement VAMC and the new UMC. This PEA was the first in a series of tiered environmental analyses. To access Tier I-related information, or information related to the site selection process, click on the Tier I Home button above.

For Tier II, VA and FEMA are currently pursuing Site-Specific Environmental Assessments (SEAs) independently of one another, while remaining in close communication during the process. This website will provide information and updates throughout the VAMC SEA process.
